2005

Another warm year, but the coolest since 2001.  There was a sense of attempts at cooler weather patterns coming into force, but there was then a very warm autumn.  Sunshine was slightly above average, and the summer had its moments.

Daily data can be accessed here.

Winter 2004/05:  A very mild winter- the mildest since 1997/98- and the most snowless since 1999/2000.

January:  The warmest January recorded up until 2005, subsequently exceeded in 2007.  It started with a dramatic New Year's Day, with sunny inervals during the day, a torrential rainstorm in early evening and then some wet snow showers.  The rest of the first two-thirds were unsettled with westerlies, and there were severe gales on the 8th with widespread structural damage.  Brief cold snap on the 18th with a little snow overnight 17th/18th.  A rather feeble northerly around the 22nd-25th, with sleet showers.  The driest January since 1997.

February:  Mild first half, then a very feeble northerly on the 13th-16th, which merely brought temperatures down to average.  There was another northerly on the 19th/20th which brought some snow, then easterly winds persisted for the rest of the month.  Showers of hail and wet snow were commonplace, but significant accumulations occurred only inland.  It was another fairly mild February, and sunshine was close to average, ending the 10-year run of sunny Februarys.

Spring 2005:  Another warm spring, but the coolest since 2001.  There was another sunny May.

March:  A dull month.  It started with some wintry weather, but very little of the snow settled.  A cool, cloudy spell followed, then cold, bright midmonth.  A surge of warm south-westerlies brought very warm, cloudy, muggy weather, but there was a fine sunny day on the 19th with 17.2C reached- remarkable for March.  The last week was dull with low cloud from the North Sea, and it was the dullest March overall since 1996.  Another warm March, mainly due to warm nights.

April:  Warm sunny start, unsettled start to the second week with a very cold northerly on the 8th, which brought the first April snow since 2001, and a temporary covering of hail around mid-morning.  The second half was uneventful, with frequent easterly winds, but it was often quite sunny.  The least warm April since 2001, although temperatures were still slightly above average.

May:  Near average temperatures, with a warm start and warm last week offset by frequent cool weather during the middle fortnight.  This was sufficient to make it the coolest May since 1997.  There were heavy hail showers with thunder on the 7th and 8th, and it was cold again around the 17th.  Sunshine was well above average.

Summer 2005:  Slightly warmer and sunnier than average.  Without the drab final third of July, it could have gone down as a pretty good summer.

June:  Cool, often cloudy first half.  Very cold night overnight 6th/7th, the coldest in June since 1998.  The second half was often very warm and sunny, with a hot day and dramatic thunderstorms on the 19th, and this was sufficient to raise temperatures and sunshine above average.

July:  Cloudy, unsettled start, but a very warm, sunny second week, with largely unbroken sunshine.  However, there was almost no sun at all during the last third of the month, which was cold by day but often quite warm by night.

August:  Unsettled, but dry and sunny at the same time.  The first half was rather cool, while the second half was quite warm.  Severe thunderstorms broke out late on the 31st.

Autumn 2005:  A notably warm autumn, but an exceptionally cold second half of November prevented it from being the warmest recorded, indeed 1999 and 2001 were both warmer (but see 2006!)

September:  Warm and sunny, with a couple of chilly northerly incursions in the second half giving cool nights.  In many ways it was like an extension of summer.  The warmest September since 1999.

October:  Extremely dull, with a lot of anticyclonic gloom in the first half.  The second half continued mostly dull, with a lot of rain at times, raising the rainfall total above average.  There was an exceptional one-off warm sunny day on the 27th, with 18.9C reached- not that remarkable for October, but certainly remarkable given how late in the month it occurred.  The warmest October since 2001, though it never looked like threatening the record.

November:  The first half was very mild and changeable, prompting thoughts that this could be a record-breaking warm autumn.  However, the second half was then exceptionally cold- the coldest second half of November since 1993- with sharp frosts and cool sunny days.  The last week saw some wintry weather, with snow early on the 25th and again on the 28th, but no significant accumulations.  The month was exceptionally sunny overall.  It was the coldest November since 1998.

December:  Sunny and fairly cold, an anticyclonic month.  Very mild on the 11th, but cooler weather soon returned.  After a dull drizzly Christmas, there was an easterly incursion on the 27th-29th, which brought accumulations of snow on the 28th, and there was still some lying snow left over as we headed into the New Year.  The daytime maximum on the 28th was only -1.2C, the lowest since 29 December 1995, though it rose to 0.9C for 0900 the next morning.

Overall, at 10.0C, another warm year, but the coolest since 2001.  It was fairly dry but not remarkably so, and sunshine was slightly above average.  Snow and frosts were below average, but again not outstandingly so, and the frequency of hail was the highest since 2001.
