1999
Warm, sunny and wet. A notable year for convective storms, with the record highest thunder frequency (13 days). The warmth was consistent through the year, and it was the third consecutive year to breach the 10C barrier. Notable for the fact that September was warmer than August.

Winter 1998/99: Another mild winter- about as mild as 1994/95- but with close to average snow, due to east-coast snow showers from short-lived northerlies. January and February both had well above average sunshine.
January: The warmest January since 1993, with frequent south-westerly winds. Very mild 4th-6th, with 13C on the 5th. There was a cold snap in the second week, with a little snow, and a 2cm cover overnight 10th/11th. Thereafter, the weather was dominated by sunshine and showers until the 20th. The final third was drier and cloudier with a persistent Bartlett/Euro high, and the last couple of days were dull and dry, but overall the month was much sunnier than average.
February: A fairly mild February overall, with warm, dry, often cloudy westerly interludes alternating with cold, sunny northerlies and north-westerlies. There was a notable wintry spell from the 7th to 10th, with snow showers from the 8th to 10th, though these occurred mostly overnight with dry sunny weather prevalent during the day. Milder and cloudier for a time, then often bright and showery from the 16th to 21st, with wet snow overnight 16th/17th and again late on the 21st. It was a very sunny last week, with showers on the last three days, and consequently the month overall was exceptionally sunny.
Spring 1999: At 9.3C, just fractionally warmer than springs 1997 and 1998. Another wet spring, but not as wet as 1998.
March: Exceptionally dull wet first third, with only moderately cold northerly winds, rotating around a depression. Some sleet on the 4th and 5th, but otherwise a completely snowless March again. The last two-thirds were sunny, raising sunshine slightly above average- the middle was very warm and sunny (16.4C on the 17th), while the final third was warm and changeable. The third warm March in a row, and the wettest recorded.
April: Warm first and last thirds more than offset the cold snap in the middle. It was a dry first week with variable sunshine, but turned more unsettled towards midmonth, with a notable cold day on the 13th- max of only 4.5C- and two dustings of snow. The minimum of -3.8 on the 14th was a record low for April. The rest of the month was mostly bright and showery, but it was dull and drizzly on the 25th-27th, and then sunny from the 28th-30th. Not as warm as April 1997.
May: About as warm as May 1998, mostly dry and cloudy, but with near average rainfall due to heavy showers and thunderstorms in the second week. Some humid thundery weather also towards the end.
Summer 1999: A near average summer statistically, but notable for a warm sunny July, and plenty of convective activity.
June: Average temperatures. It was mostly cloudy and cool during the first half, but warm and sunny during the second half. There were some dramatic rainstorms on the 5th, 20th-22nd and 27th-28th, with a tornado early on the 22nd.
July: Warm, humid first week with the odd rumble of thunder on the 3rd, and big rainstorm on the 6th. The second week was mostly warm and sunny, followed by a spell of changeable showery westerlies. Another big convective storm on the 19th, with large hail. The final third was often disappointingly cloudy, especially around the 22nd, but the month ended sunny. It was about as sunny as July 1997, and the warmest and driest July since 1995.
August: Cloudy wet first third, with frequent south-easterly winds. Showery spell in the middle, with thunderstorms on the 17th, then dull and very wet on the 18th and 19th. The final third was mostly sunny and cool. Overall a fairly cool August- the coolest since 1994, and the wettest recorded up to 1999 (it took until 2002 to record a wetter August).
Autumn 1999: Until 2006, this stood as the warmest autumn recorded. Quite sunny, but not as outstandingly so as it was in the south. September was warmer than August this year!
September: This month was like an extension of summer- until 2006, this was the warmest September recorded, and both maxima and minima were higher than in August. The first half was consistently sunny and warm, the second half changeable with southerly winds and a mix of sun and showers. Thunderstorms broke out on the 22nd, and there were severe thunderstorms late on the 26th. The showery second half resulted in a wet September overall- the wettest since 1995- while it was about as sunny as September 1997.
October: Rather uneventful. It began with a cold snap, it had a warm spell around the 10th, a cloudy easterly spell in the middle, and then unsettled westerlies. Temperatures, sunshine and rainfall were all close to normal, perhaps with a slightly high average minimum (the highest since 1995).
November: Warm, changeable and quite sunny near the beginning and end, with south-westerly winds. A very wet day on the 5th. The middle sector of the month was dull and dry, but it was colder and brighter from the 16th to 20th. A half-hearted northerly incursion, with rain, hail and sleet showers on the 18th, and one heavy shower around midday turned to snow for a time. Overall another warm November, but not as warm as November 1997.
December: Cold, changeable and very sunny with frequent north-westerly winds- similar to December 1993. However, there was no significant lying snow, with a cold snap on the 14th/15th providing a barrage of hail and sleet and even thunder, and the bigger cold snap on the 18th-21st providing only a dusting. A technical "White Christmas" with a heavy rain shower turning briefly to snow on Christmas Day, but not a real white Christmas. Nonetheless, as it was unexpected, it was a pleasant surprise. The exceptionally abundant sunshine was the main feature of this month. The coldest December since 1996.
Overall, at 10.1C, another warm year, just fractionally above 1997 and 1998. Sunny and wet. With 13 days of thunder, the most thundery year, and the frequency of 13 days of hail was the highest since 1996. Another year with below average frost, but the highest frost frequency since 1996.
