Winter 1993/94: Slightly on the cold side, and the second snowiest winter quarter recorded, after 1995/96. Due to the snowy end to November 1993, however, the 1993/94 season (November-April) as a whole was slightly snowier than the 1995/96 season. It was quite sunny and wet.
January: Another 'westerly' January but with near average temperatures. The first half of the month was mostly unsettled, sunny and wet, with a high number of bright showery days. There was a brief northerly blast midmonth, with lying snow early on the 16th although it soon melted. Ice created very hazardous conditions on the 17th. The final third was often showery and blustery, and rather mild. Gales on the 27th, a day when the showers briefly turned wintry late on. Overall sunshine was well above average.
February: A proper winter month. The first half was mostly unsettled with southerly and south-westerly winds, and quite mild, but strong easterly and south-easterly winds brought heavy snowfalls around midmonth. The snow melted on the 17th, but returned on the 20th, with heavy prolonged snow showers from a north-easterly flow on the 21st. This snow stuck around for quite some time, with mild air not re-establishing until the 26th. Overall the coldest and snowiest February recorded- along with December 1995, the coldest of any month- with sunshine and rainfall close to average.
Spring 1994: A mild March, average April and cold May resulted in a near-average mean temperature of 7.9C, making it rather cooler than Spring 1993. March and April were classic spring months, with plenty of sunshine and a high frequency of sunshine-and-showers days. Overall with just 116mm, it was a dry spring, and also rather sunny.
March: A very westerly month. Mostly sunny first week, with some showers on the 3rd-5th, then a rather mild, cloudy second week. The third week featured blustery showery north-westerly winds, giving five consecutive days with hail, and snow late on the 18th. Bright showery weather also prevailed for much of the final third, with large hail late on the 25th. Overall, sunshine was well above average, while it was about as mild as March 1993.
April: Sunshine and showers and cool north-westerly winds characterised the first third. Somehow, the area missed out on all of the snowfalls that affected many other regions. The middle sector of the month was also cool, with northerly winds and some cloud and showers at times, then the final third was very warm with southerlies. Thundery showers late on the 23rd. The month ended warm and sunny and rather humid, with 20C reached on the early date of 29 April. Overall, with a mean of 7.5C, one of the coldest Aprils recorded.
May: The second coldest May recorded (but see May 1996!). The first and final thirds were quite sunny, but the middle third was very dull, giving near average sunshine overall. It was quite dry. After a fairly warm first third, the rest of the month was on the cold side with frequent easterly winds.
Summer 1994: A summer noted for a high frequency of southerly winds and hot humid weather, chiefly between 23 June and 4 August. With a mean temperature of 15.0C it wasn't an outstandingly warm summer, as the warm July was partly cancelled out by a cool August.
June: Dry and sunny. Cool breezy weather with sunshine and showers was the dominant theme during the first third, with hail and thunder on the 3rd and again on the 8th. The middle sector was generally dry and sunny, with a hot sultry day on the 13th with the first maximum above 25C, this was followed by a cool cloudier spell. The final third was often hot and humid, with 27C reached on the 28th. Overall, with only 26mm, a notably dry June- there was no drier June until 2006.
July: Warm and muggy. The first week was often cloudy and humid with near-average temperatures, but the remaining two-thirds were often sunny and dry with high pressure in charge, and frequent southerly winds. Hot around the 12th with the temperature again touching 27C. Thunderstorms broke out late on the 24th. At 16.4C, a notably warm July, but soon to be exceeded by July 1995.
August: A warm muggy start, with intense thunderstorms late on the 3rd, persisting into the early hours of the following morning. The rest of the month was generally cool and unsettled with changing weather patterns. Cold and cloudy from the 8th to 14th, then some warm sunny weather returned, then a showery end.
Autumn 1994: Near-average temperatures (10.2C) with the cold September and October offset by the outstandingly warm November. Also near-average sunshine and rainfall.
September: Dull, cold and wet, for the second successive September- about as cold as September 1993. Frequent northerly winds and some persistent rain at times, though nothing like as wet as September 1993.
October: A mostly settled first half, with a notable northerly blast on the 3rd, giving a maximum of just 8C, followed by a slight air frost the following night- the earliest air frost recorded. A very fine spell from the 10th to 16th, with hazy sunshine. The rest of the month was changeable with westerly winds. Overall a sunny month, with temperatures a little below average due to cool nights, though nowhere near as cold as October 1993.
November: After the snowy November 1993, this November was a big shock to the system- indeed the average minimum was actually higher than October's! Mostly dull, very mild and quite wet first half with southerly winds, then a dry, fairly sunny second half with mild south-westerlies. Temperatures dipped below average on the 29th, with sunshine and patchy fog, and some frost. Overall, the warmest November recorded- indeed in Central England it was the warmest November since records began in 1659.
December: Mild and wet, but also quite sunny. The settled start gave way to blustery showery south-westerly winds. A mild cloudy second week- outstandingly mild on the 10th with 16.1C being comfortably the highest reading for December. A sunny third week, with a brief cold snap just before Christmas, and a flurry of wet snow on the 21st. Christmas Day was boring, dull and mild, then the rest of the month was generally wet and cloudy. Snow showers on New Year's Eve, but the snow failed to settle. Overall, alongside 1997, the warmest December recorded.
Overall, at 9.3C, slightly warmer than 1993, but one of the colder years in this record. It was dry and sunny overall. Due to the near-absence of snow in early winter 1994/95, the year as a whole had below average snow.
